City
Side Gardens Get Facelifts
With their redwood signs and lush greenery, Clean-Land's City Side
Gardens have earned a great deal of attention as beautiful, established
Cleveland landmarks. But something is new. Many of the sites city-wide
were treated to some new perennials and ornamental grasses last
year.
"We're always experimenting with plant material, testing which
do well and which don't," said Jim Dittoe, Clean-Land horticulturist.
"In tough urban conditions, we sometimes have to try many different
varieties before we hit on something that works for the long term."
"Also, we wanted to add some variety and personality to the
gardens," said Dittoe. "The new perennials were a nice
touch." Some of last year's success stories: black-eyed Susan,
maiden hair grass, fountain grass and Autumn Joy sedum."
