How
to Move Large Trees
Careful preparation, knowledge of industry standards and proper
maintenance practices help improve chances for long-term transplant
success
Transplanting
large trees - once a costly, labor-intensive effort - has become
increasingly more efficient with the development of sophisticated
moving equipment. As a result, landscape designers are turning to
tree moving as an alternative to destroying large trees to make
way for development. And those desiring a developed landscape have
the choice of transplanting a larger tree, as opposed to waiting
for a young tree to mature.
While
the job is easier, moving large trees still has significant risks.
Young trees - those less than 4 inches in diameter - respond quickly
to a new environment. Large, mature trees, however, need special
care to make the transition. In most cases, you'll want to work
with an expert in large-tree moving because of the risk of transplant
failure. Even so, having an understanding of the process is essential
to ensure your tree move achieves long-term success.
