Working with the Environment
Reclamation programs develop mining properties, increase value

With the move toward a more environmentally sound world, industries that extract natural resources have become a target of controversy. Many industries, such as oil exploration, are being scrutinized for long-term environmental damage, causing the public to demand alternatives to environmentally harmful practices.

For Standard Lafarge, preserving the environment is a company philosophy. Reclamation programs, designed to develop the land for agricultural, residential, recreational or wildlife purposes, are in place for all its mining properties.

"Our approach is to go beyond what the government requires for reclamation," said Irv Maurer, manager, natural resources. "We look ahead, evaluate the best use for the land after mining is complete and work to develop the property and increase its value. In that way, we help the company and the environment."
